Who can search the PPSR?
People must not search the Register without good reason. Strict privacy conditions are set out in Section 173 of the Personal Property Securities Act (PPSA) to determine who may search the Register.
This list includes people searching:
- An individual with their consent
- To deciding whether to provide credit or to invest in, with or through a person or organisation
- To establish whether personal property is subject to a security interest
How can I search?
Each search of the PPSR will cost $1 and the PPSR can be searched by:
- Debtor Person Name
- Debtor Organisation Name
- Motor Vehicle Serial Number
- Aircraft Serial Number or
- Financing Registration Number
Debtor Person Searching
The PPSR will look for an exact match to all the search criteria you enter. The two mandatory fields when searching for a Debtor Person are their First and Last name. Entering any further search criteria eg. City/Town or Date of Birth will narrow your search results but may also increase the possibility of missing possible matches. You can use the *Wild Card with this search option andthis may help with your searching.
Debtor Organisation Searching
The PPSR will look for an exact match to all the search criteria you enter. You may conduct a Debtor Organisation search by entering the Company Name and/or Incorporation Number. For a thorough search, you could consider conducting a search using just the organisation name and one using just the incorporation number. You can use the * Wild Card when you enter search criteria into the Organisation Name field
Motor Vehicle Searching
When conducting a Motor Vehicle Search you are required to enter at least one identifier, however if they exist, all numbers (Registration, Chassis & VIN) must be specified in any search. Where you enter more than one search criteria, the system will look for securities that match any of yoursearch criteria. This will assist with issues associated with registration plates changing eg personalised plates. No Wild Card character can be used.
* Wild Card
The asterix character (*) is used within the PPSR system as the wild card when conducting searches. A minimum of 2 alpha-numeric characters must be entered to use the wild card. Putting the * at the end of text tells the system to find all records that start with the text you have entered. When it is positioned in the middle of the text, it tells the system to find all records that begin and end with the text separated by the wild card character e.g. com* will return company, committee and community while com*y will return company and community. The Wild Card character can only be used once per field and it can take the place of one or more characters. More help on searching is available from the website.
