Debtor (Person)
How do I search the PPSR using a debtor's details where the debtor is a person?
What you need to know
The Personal Property Securities Regulations 2001 set out the requirements for recording the debtor's name on the financing statement. These are referred to as the ‘Debtor Name Rules’. Having a set of rules such as these makes searching the PPSR easier and more reliable. Learn more about the debtor name rules for individuals.
When conducting a 'Debtor Person Search' the system will look for an exact match to all the search criteria entered. The mandatory search criteria to be entered are Surname and First Name. If you do choose to enter more criteria into the search fields please be sure this information is correct. The more search criteria you enter, the narrower your search becomes.
As with Debtor Organisation Searching, a wild card character * can be used for a 'Debtor Person Search'.Top
What personal information does the register hold about people?
If you are the debtor (i.e. the person who owes payment or performance of an obligation), the Personal Property Securities Act 1999 requires only your name, address and date of birth to be recorded on the register. It is optional to enter in a debtor’s contact details such as telephone and fax number.
If you are the secured party (i.e. the person or organisation generally lending the money and holding the security interest), you will be required to provide your name and address and other contact details.
If the debtor or secured party is an organisation, and you are the contact person for that organisation, you will be required to provide your name and address and other contact details.
Will personal financial details be available to people searching the register?
A secured party is not required to enter your personal financial details in a financing statement. The Personal Property Securities Register only shows that you have agreed to give a security interest over personal property and have an obligation in respect of that.
